Morning Burtle,

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has made us feel so welcome to teh village. We have been here 3 months or so now, and in the last 24hrs I have had sweet peas and green beans delivered to my door - where else would you get such a community spirit - so, thank you!

Also, as most of you know I have 3 small children and have now had a chance to explore the local area - to this point, has anyone or has there every been a playgroup at Burtle village hall? If not, would people be interested ? Who would I need to speak to to find out more about setting one up?? Let me know your thoughts.........

Ashcott and Shapwick Cricket Club, who have several senior and junior players living in Burtle, have recently been successful in attracting grant funding to allow us to purchase our ground at Northbrook Road Shapwick thereby preserving it use for recreational cricket in the Polden Hills area for the future.

We are marking the award of these grants at our annual Presidents XI game on Sunday 1st August at lunchtime (approximately 1.00 - 2.00 pm).

We would be delighted to invite you to this event to mark this important step in the club's evolution.

Anyone in Burtle interested in playing cricket might find this a useful opportunity to come and see the club.

Best wishes.

Hi to everyone in Burtle. We would just like to thank you all for making us feel welcome over the last year. We cant afford to live in the village, but bought four and a half acres of land from Heather last May. We have been very busy with tree management and fencing, gates, rhyne dredging, drove upkeep etc. But we have still found plenty of people to stop and pass the time of day with us, filling us in on local knowledge. We were born into farming village communities, but circumstances dictated that we have lived in the town for a good many years. Being accepted in the village makes us feel the way it used to be growing up in the middle of nowhere, but always surrounded by family. We enjoyed being able to come to the recent Barn dance, and chatting to people. Thanks especially to Heather for selling us land in such a beautiful area, and the support she has given to us. If we can help with anything that needs doing, please let us know. See you soon, walking the dogs, riding the bikes or taking the pony out in the cart.  Gilbert and Jane

TO all in Burtle,

Just to let you know there will be diggers/vans visiting Fairview House this week for the installation of a sewage treatment plant for the house - this was/is part of the deal of buying the house.

I only found out late Friday it was happpening, so apologies to anyone who got conerned this morning when they saw all these diggers turn up!!

The dividing fence between Fairview and the proposed building plot is due to go up next week as far as I know.

If you have any questions/concerns please give us a call. FYI - we do not own the building plot so will not be able to answer any questions regarding it!!!

Many thanks

Hello to all in Burtle. Finally have internet access so can now introduce ourselves. We have just moved to the village as some of you might know; we have moved into  Fairview House (old boarding house for the prep school) - or monkey puzzle house ! You might have even heard me shouting at my 3 very noisy children (Oscar, Olivia, Joshua). We have already been made to feel very welcome by the village but would love to know any history of Fairview House, so if you fancy a cup of tea, or do know anything about the house we would love to hear from you.

Andrew, Charlotte, and the three little ones!

Well done to all the bad players those on the stage and those off the stage who worked so hard to produce what was a epic performance,  the audiences were a joy to perform to and made it all worthwhile.

To perform in a warm hall with new stage and curtains and new chairs for the audience to sit on  completed the enjoyment thank you everyone, see you again next year , ooh no you wont -- ooh yes you will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Burtle Townsfolk!!

My name is Carrie Burtle Wallace and I live in the state of Illinois USA. I was wondering if anyone in Burtle knows the history of how the village was named?

When my brother Ron Burtle was in the US AIr Force , stationed in Bentwaters England in early 1980's ., he had visited your lovely village. I recall as a child seeing pics of my brother taken in front of the Burtle Inn.  Upon his visit there , he met and managed to stay in touch with a few of the locals of Burtle  even after returning to the states. He has very fond memories from his visit there...Any info you could share would be appreciated!!

Hello..what a great village website! I came upon it by accident when trying to find a contact detail for The Polden Post if it is still running. Can anyone help with a name number or email?

I lived in Edington for many years until 2004 so it was a delight  to browse old haunts!

I now live in Street and have opened a new Beauty Salon (Beauty at the Manse see www.beautyinsomerset.co.uk) and really wanted to advertise our new venture but support an old favourite magazine at the same time! So if any one can help please email or call us on 01458 440242   or drop into The Manse, just 2 doors up from Living Homes!

Miracles still happen .(if you live in burtle)

The miracle man Robin said i can replace the old cold ugly hall with anew sexy hall, it will be made from local sheep wool, straw , bottles and clay in three weeks Robin plus the odd collection of merry  followers had secured most of the finance and designed the building .

We are in a recession yet almost the entire project was built with unpaid labour but plenty of tea coffee and cakes consumed and stories told .Burtle be proud . Olympic stadium next???????????

I'd just like to say how good your new hall is looking.  I am a member of the Camping and caravanning club folk song and dance group that camped in the field next to the hall.  good luck with the opening event and I hope to see the completed hall next year when we come to the village again.

P.S.  I work at the local senior school in Corsham and have told one of the Geography teachers about your 'recycled' build as he is really interested in things like this.

Wurzels Tribute Night! with The Mangledwurzels

Saturday 29th December at Tom Mogg Inn, Station Road, Burtle, Somerset TA7 8NU (01278 722399) Free entry

Saturday sees The Mangledwurzels making a return trip to the Somerset Levels. We played at the Harvest Home party in August 2008 (on keyboard player Jethro Tool's birthday!) - and a great night was had by all. This time they are at the Tom Mogg Inn, and looking forward to putting on a proper Somerset night's entertainment!

The Mangledwurzels are a three-piece Scrumpy & Western band based in Somerset celebrating the works of Adge Cutler and The Wurzels. More than just a Wurzels tribute band, The Mangledwurzels play Wurzels songs, old and new, blended with self-penned titles and pop standards 'Mangled' in true Wurzels tradition. Sharp-eyed viewers may have seen the band performing on ITV's prime time show Britain’s Best Dish, where they unsuccessfully tried to bribe the judges with gifts of scrumpy cider!

Fresh from a summer packed with high profile gigs across the West Country – including a slot on the main stage at the Bristol Harbour Festival, headlining the inaugural Bristol Cider Festival, and shows from Cornwall to West Sussex - the band are currently recording their second album "Wurz'Ee II" due for release in the New Year.

To all visitors to the Burtle Village web site.

We are being repeatedly attacked by a virus which corrupts the database on the web server and renders the site inaccessible.  I have now restored the database from backups on 6 separate occasions over the last few weeks and as yet have been unable to identify which visitor to the site is the carrier of the virus.

I urge you all to please check you have ant-virus software installed and that it is up to date.

After the last attack we unfortunately lost all our messages of goodwill from the Harvest Home which I was unable to recover.
