Past Harvest Home Event
2012 Harvest Home
The 2012 Harvest Home was a great success, the weather was kind after all despite the copious amounts of rain on the previous days. As the crowds gathered for the parade from the Burtle Inn the clouds disappeared and the sun came out for the afternoon.
As part of this year’s event we decided to hold a Scarecrow competition and typically the villagers of Burtle were not short of ideas and enthusiasm. We had nearly 50 entries scattered around the village with everything from policemen with speed guns, fireman rescuing cats from trees, pirates, mermaids and thieves clambering over the church gate. We even had a magnificent metal scarecrow welded from scrap.
The parade led by the Burtle Silver Band was followed by lovely Harvest Service in the field led by the Rev Trish Ollive followed by an excellent lunch of local meat and salad, trifle and local cheese. The lunch was served by the children of the village to over 380 villagers and friends and guest speakers.
The evening entertainment commenced with the Young Farmers treating us to an It’s a Knock Out style race in fancy dress and a Tug’o’war followed by musical entertainment from Hansome Norman and Penthouse Shed and traditional Pork Roast bap and Chips.
The event was a huge success thanks to the efforts of the Harvest Home Committee and the army of helpers who lent a hand on the day and for several days beforehand. We would also like to extend a big thank you to all the sponsors who provided money, materials and raffle prizes.
