About Burtle

Welcome to the web site of the most friendly village on the SOMERSET LEVELS.

We are situated in the heart of THE VALE OF AVALON which is a unique conservation area, rich in wildlife and stunning landscapes. At either end of the vale are the striking mounts of GLASTONBURY TOR and THE BRENT KNOLL with open views of the MENDIP and POLDEN HILLS.

It is common to see roe deer, badgers and foxes and there are otters, mink and many other types of animals which can be seen if you are careful.

Buzzards and other birds of prey are easily spotted and there is an abundance of other large and small species of bird. Look out for the large flocks of mute swans grazing in the fields and winter visitors such as the bewick swan and lapwing.

With one church dedicated to St Philip and St James which dates from --------? ,the choice of two, quite different, public houses (THE BURTLE AND TOM MOGG INNS) and a village hall , the spiritual and social needs of the villagers and visitors are well catered for. Visitors are always made welcome at any public events that are taking place at the time.

The historic CITY OF WELLS and the ancient towns of GLASTONBURY, BRIDGWATER and STREET are each only 15-20 minutes away by car but the surrounding area is also ideal for cycling and walking.
